Hi #W2Belongs2Me members!
Thank you so much for your support over the past month. It’s been a lot of drama, but we’re still alive & kicking —and going mobile!
We’re still faced with severely limited access to the W2 space at Woodwards and a regrettable shut-down of programs, but we are still going to fight for it back - we have until the end of February to do that.
HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED = WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS?
Attend Meetings:
We have scheduled two meeting times that we want to become regular weekly meetings:
1) W2 COMMUNITY MEMBERS’ MEETING: Thursday, Jan 10th, 6:30pm meet outfront of W2 and walk to La Casita (101 Cordova) half block north of W2 so we can meet in the warm basement and eat and drink if we like. A broader community meeting for those who want to stay in touch, ask questions, and want to contribute to building #W2Belongs2Me, our W2 members’ community.
2) COMMITTEE MEETINGS: Tuesday, Jan 15th, 6:30pm at Lore Krill Coop, 65 West Cordova - for those who would like to be part of a Committee (e.g. Programming, Communications, Fundraising, Finance)
Join the Programming Committee or Communications Committee, attend the events, help spread the word!
We are planning numerous events, educational and social justice programs, community gatherings, radio shows, web and TV based content throughout the next 8 weeks so please do follow us and stay connected at this time. We will need your help with planning and producing these events, and getting the word out.
Join the Fundraising Committee!
This programming includes a series of awesome fundraisers with artists, speakers and Dj's. These events will raise crucial funds for a #W2Belongs2Me legal strategy (we’ve raised $1000 so far) as well as funds to make our community infrastructure mobile while protecting the integrity of the locked out W2 community.
One of these upcoming events is Thursday, Jan 17th - DICE! at the Waldorf, in conjunction with Art’s birthday! Yes, it’s Art’s 1,000,050th birthday! We’d love to see you and your friends out there, celebrating your art and your culture, while advancing the work of #W2Belongs2Me. Shah DJ’s Willisist and Eradik will be joined by Dunks and Don Chow. There is a 30 second commercial airing on CiTR and Coop Radio, have a listen, and then RSVP on our Facebook event!
And, in case you missed it, here is a video that the community has created in order to speak up against what we think is yet another attempt from the city to gentrify the DTES. As part of a communication strategy, we will continue to have video updates as we go along.
Check out how awesome W2 Lights NYE 2013 turned out to be from Sid Tan’s video report. If you weren’t able to attend, there’s more background on these Facebook events: Dec 28th Raven Steals the Night held at Chapel Arts and W2 Lights NYE held at the Korean Community Centre.
Although we believe in the importance of the Woodwards site, we confirmed the truth that we can manifest a good time anywhere and it is community that counts. Straight up. BOOM!
