Saturday W2 Benefit featuring El Papa Chango (San Fran)

We are pleased to copresent El Papa Chango for a fundraiser this Saturday night at the W2 Perel Building. We invite you to COME IN FROM THE COLD with tonight's special lineup, with proceeds to W2 Community Media Arts Society. Tickets $15 at the door, 112 West Hastings, just across the street from Woodward's.

El Papa Chango (El Circo, SF)
Half papa, half monkey, really means Universe! Diego Novoa aka El Papa Chango grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he began his career as sound engineer and dj, tinkering around with speakers and amps at the ripe age of fifteen. In 1997, Diego moved to Ashland, Oregon, where he fell in love with the magic of "La Pacha Mama" (Mother Earth). It was this romance that birthed El Circo, the multimedia production company encompassing performance, music, video, fashion, installations, all underneath the ceiling of a giant geodesic dome and surrounded with Bag End bass.

They call him El Papachango because he mixes from a diverse palette of electro, ragga, breaks, and hip-hop, creating a musical journey that has Universal appeal: sassy, playful, suave, and sometimes downright naughty, but always with a spicy Latin flavor.

Also on tonight's lineup is local favourites:

Phoenix Olivia
Founder of Soldiers of the Underground (a vancouver collective of djs and producers) Phoenix Olivia has an insatiable love for music and underground dance culture. Hailing from Guyana South America she grew up in a musical house which carved the diverse character of her sound today. Phoenix is adept in both the etheric style of Progressive House as well as the dirty urban sound of Reggae/Dancehall. This diversity in sound can most likely be attributed to growing up in the West Indies where Reggae and Dancehall is king and eventually moving to Canada and discovering the electronic dance scene at the age of 19.

Under her party production company Soldiers of the Underground, Phoenix has showcased artists such as Bluetech, Adham Shaikh, Noah Pred, Kevin Shiu, Cary Chang, Jacob Cino, Chris Misener, Prince Sho, Bounty Hunta, Michael Red, Taal Mala, Max Ulis and Osiris Indriya to name a few.

She has played for packed dancefloors as far as East Africa and Cuba. Expect an evening of sexy dancehall with this queen behind the decks.
