SFU students vote in referendum March 16-18 on W2 financing

W2 provides SFU students a space to mix and create with Woodward's community

In the summer of 2010, W2 will move its media programs across the
street to the Woodward's heritage building (next to SFU's new home). From within that 8,800 sf facility, the Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS) and W2 are partnering up to provide a mixed space for DTES residents and SFU students with the W2 Cafe and W2

Break the Ice and support an interaction with Montreal

W2 requires 8 volunteers to perform 2 shifts each (or more) to facilitate audience interaction with a media installation produced by our friends Society of Arts & Technology (SAT) of Montreal. I shot a brief mobile video demo of the install here. Following the Cultural Olympiad Digital Edition (CODE) festival at Great Northern Way Campus

Irwin - what key points can pass on to a friend if I want to give info about your bid to buy the Perel building? Don't know anything about it save what you mentioned last night at the reading.

Hi Irwin, I would love to meet up for FabLab planning. What is the best time for you? Evenings? Weekend? Over lunch? You can also reach me at delza@livingcode.org if that is more convenient.

Hi Irwin,

Thanks for your reply about the FabLab. I'm interested in helping, have some experience with programming Arduino (and Lego Mindstorms), and I've been tracking the DIY versions of FabLab tools for some time.

There are also middle-ground projects like the MakerBot (http://www.makerbot.com/) which is a kit for building a 3D printer, which I think runs $US750 for the kit. Somewhat easier than building completely from scratch, but much cheaper than buying a commercial 3D printer.

Desktop Factory was trying to build a sub-$5000 3D printer (more powerful and higher resolution than MakerBot), but recently was purchased by 3DSystems, so their fate is up in the air right now. On the other hand, 3DSystems has a discontinued model of their commercial 3D printers for about $4999 right now (or recently).

While there are several projects on Instructables (http://www.instructables.com/id/Zach-Radding-Homebrew-Laser-Cutter/, for instance), but what kept me from buying a commercial one for home is not so much the price (they start around $2000), but the need for a heavy-duty ventilation system (burning plastic is fairly toxic). A DIY fab lab would need to take ventilation into consideration too, especially for soldering stations.

Exciting stuff, and I look forward to talking to you more about this. I'm also interested in the computer side of W2--I used to teach continuing ed classes at UBC and would be interested in doing an intro to programming or game making for W2.

Hi Irwin,

It was great meeting you and talking at BarCamp. I'm very excited by what is going on at W2, and I've been spreading the word. While we were talking, you mentioned that a Fab Lab is in the works, but a variation on the idea that I had not heard of before. I can remember what the name of it was to look up more info. Can you remind me?

Thanks!
