Event Description

W2 Community Media Arts is pleased to present (T)HERE IN SPIRIT, a solo exhibition by Vancouver's Jeremy Crowle at W2 Perel Gallery. The exhibition begins January 12th, with the official opening reception on Thursday, January 14th at 8pm. The exhibition will run until February 6th.

Jeremy Crowle is an internationally-exhibited painter, photographer, and designer. In this exhibition of new works, Crowle successfully portrays the 'digital boundaries' between the artist, subject and audience/witness. His environments provide commentary on space as it exists in its most rudimentary forms. In Crowle's physical places or in digital landscapes, the viewer is activated by the body's reaction through this physical environment that connects to responsiveness and internal dialogue. His medium and large format paintings reveal the moment of transfer of digital code into the physical environment of this information society. Crowle succeeds in revealing some intimacy in the dynamic relationship of question and response between both places.

Our physical and digital spaces are slowly merging, while our response, Crowle infers, may favour being pulled towards what seems to be a more accessible digital landscape that sustains gratification at any given moment. It exists to serve us and because it does, have we perhaps abandoned our own holistic health and given priority to it rather than our physical world? Crowle is embedded in this conversation with his own web savvy and surrounded by both digital culture and his painting studio on Galiano Island. He concludes that wherever our priority lives, our loyalty and responsibility will follow, no matter what our intended course may be.

W2 Perel Gallery is a space being operated by W2 Community Media Arts Society, which opens the 8800 sq ft centre at Woodward's in Spring 2010. W2 will feature a 150-capacity performance space, community TV studio, FM radio station, gallery, social enterprise café, letterpress studio, telepresence and mobile media programs. Until its official opening in the Woodward’s heritage building, W2 is running programs, media arts residencies, and special events in the Perel Building at 112 W Hastings in Vancouver. During the Olympics, the building will be transformed into the W2 Culture + Media House with 150 artists and some 40 events.
